The New York Times reported on July 5 that a 69-year-old woman was killed by an alligator while walking her dog in her neighborhood in the town of Hilton Head Island (South Carolina, USA).

This is the second fatal alligator attack in the county in less than a year, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said. The incident happened on July 3 and the victim’s body was found in the lagoon at Spanish Wells, a residential community on Hilton Head Island.

Previously, the anonymous victim had left the house at around 7 a.m. to walk the dog , and relatives went looking for the dogs after the dogs returned without owners, according to spokeswoman Angela Viens, a spokeswoman for the agency. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

A family member discovered her and contacted emergency services at around 9:30 a.m. As emergency workers tried to assist the victim, an alligator appeared, disrupting rescue efforts, according to the statement. The victim was later declared dead on the spot.

The male alligator, nearly 3 meters long, was later captured and euthanized, according to South Carolina Department of Natural Resources officials. The agency said it was the sixth death in South Carolina out of 24 alligator attacks since 2000.
